ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments 2017 Press Release

ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments is published today. In 2016, ShanghaiRanking published this ranking for the first time, adopting a unique methodology highlighting the performance of more than 300 universities with sport-related units. In the published list, 16 units are sport universities. There are 35 universities with more than 1 sport-related institutions or units. This ranking allows sport-related institutions and units to compare with similar peers other than with multi-disciplinary universities in a certain subject. About 300 top universities are published in this ranking based on the measurement of publication, citation, citations per publication, top 25% journals publications, and internationally collaborated publications. The bibliometric data is collected from Web of Science database with a time window of five years. European universities dominate this year’s ranking list. There are 122 European institutions on the Top 300 list. Half of these units are from the United Kingdom, Spain and Germany with 39 units, 13 units, and 9 units respectively. Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences remains the highest ranked unit in Europe and is ranked second in the world.

118 institutions are from Americas, 15 more than last year. 78 of these units are from the United States and the country has the strongest presence in ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments 2017 than other countries. Also strongly performed, 25 institutions from Canada and 15 from Brazil are listed in the ranking this year.

Deakin University’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences from Australia is ranked at the top for the second year. 51 institutions are from Asia and Oceania and about 90% of these institutions are from Australia, China, Japan, and New Zealand.

Two institutions are from Africa. University of Cape Town’s Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is ranked 46th and Universite de la Manouba’s Higher Institute of Sports and Physical Education is ranked 151-200.
