The University of Connecticut stands with great pride among the top 20 public institutions in the nation, committed to pioneering research, academic excellence, and invaluable outreach initiatives making an impact on communities nation-wide and internationally.  It was the second U.S. university invited into Universitas 21, an elite international network of leading research-intensive universities in 13 countries comprising some of the world's major institutions of higher education.

In the midst of an unprecedented transformation supported by the State of Connecticut, the University of Connecticut is home not only to renowned faculty who include some of the leading experts in their respective fields on the national and international scale, but also an engaged student body that is amongst the most academically talented of any in the University's history. Exceptional incoming scholars with an appetite for exploration are complementing an already strong faculty and helping to shape the future of the university.  More than 100 research centers and institutes serve the University’s teaching, research, diversity, and outreach missions.  A Carnegie Foundation Research University, the University has been ranked in the Top 5 IU GreenMetric World University Ranking for the past two years based on its internationally recognized energy management, sustainability-related scholarship, and the proportion of green space on campus.  It has also been ranked No. 1 in the Top Ten USA Coolest Schools for its environmental initiatives by the Sierra Club, an international environmental advocacy organization.  Forbes Magazine ranked the University 30th among the 124 national public universities highlighted in its 2012 "America's Best Colleges."

The University of Connecticut’s expanding international reputation is supported by: University-wide initiatives and policies relating to the creation, promotion and advancement of internationalization, international education, and international research; the development of international partnerships with universities throughout the world; an Office and Vice Provost of Global Affairs coordinating international programs across all schools, colleges and campuses; curriculum development focused on international topics and issues; development of international conferences and support for international travel for faculty and graduate students; global recognition and research of many of its faculty who have received Fulbright Scholar and other awards for study and scholarship outside the U.S.; and promotion of enrollment of international students and enhancement of financial aid opportunities for them.

The University is undergoing one of the most extensive building programs of any public university in the United States, fueled by billion dollar investments to renew, rebuild, and enhance all of its campuses, including the main campus at Storrs with ten outstanding Schools and Colleges, four regional campuses (Avery Point, Hartford, Stamford, and Waterbury), the School of Law and Graduate Business Learning Center in Hartford, the School of Social Work at the Greater Hartford Campus, and the Health Center in Farmington (Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, graduate programs, medical and dental clinics and John Dempsey Hospital).  The Health Center pursues a mission of providing outstanding health care education in an environment of exemplary patient care, research and public service.  A strong and growing endowment for the University helps sustain excellence by providing resources beyond tuition and state budget support.

The University's recent initiatives include: targeted, strategic investments in facilities, faculty and students in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines; a planned technology park focused on advanced manufacturing and designed to promote and house industry partnerships; and bioscience research, innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization to move the University and its Health Center to the forefront of the bioscience industry, improve access to state-of-the-art care, and help meet the health care needs of the future.

Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut serves as the flagship for public higher education and the primary doctoral degree granting public institution in Connecticut.  The University is dedicated to excellence demonstrated through national and international recognition.  As Connecticut’s public research university, through freedom of academic inquiry and expression, the University creates and disseminates knowledge by means of scholarly and creative achievements, graduate and professional education, and outreach.  Through a focus on teaching and learning, the University helps every student grow intellectually and become a contributing member of the state, national, and world communities.  Through research, teaching, service, and outreach, the University embraces diversity and cultivates leadership, integrity, and engaged citizenship in our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  As the state’s flagship public university, and as a land grant and sea grant institution, the University promotes the health and well-being of individuals and populations through enhancing the social, economic, cultural, and natural environments of the state and beyond.
