Introduction

Shihezi University is a comprehensive university, which is located in the garden city of Shihezi, which was recently awarded the Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment, by the Manas River at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang. Shihezi University, funded in 1949, came into being in April 1996 as a combination of four institutions—the Agricultural College of Shihezi that was affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture, the Shihezi Medical College, the Normal College of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) and the College of Economics of the XPCC. Shihezi University offers 11 specialties—economics, law, education, literature, history, sciences, engineering, agriculture, medicine, trade and arts. The university has 22 colleges, offering 5 doctorate degrees authorization centers, with 25 sub-discipline doctor’s degree authorization centers, 23 masters’ degrees authorization centers, with 144 related sub-discipline master’s degree authorization centers, 82 undergraduate programs and 3 post-doctoral mobile stations. The university has jointly set up graduate education centres with Peking University and Tianjin University, as well as a base for culture-oriented quality-education of college students of China. Shihezi University has 3 teaching teams at the national level, 4 national excellent courses, 5 national specialties, 1 national-level experiment teaching demonstration centre, 1 national-level bilingual teaching demonstration course. The University has 2 key laboratories that are co-constructed by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the XPCC; 2 key laboratories and 2 engineering centers supported and constructed by the Ministry of Education; 2 nation-province co-built engineering research centers; 1 key laboratory supported and constructed by the Ministry of Agriculture; 1 training base of the Ministry of Agriculture. 6 key laboratories of the XPCC, 2 engineering technology research centers of the XPCC as well as 4 key Research Institute for the Humanities. The 4 bases are also the key scientific research bases of the XPCC and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The university now has a faculty of 2,507, including 1,611 full-time teachers, 174 professors,529 associate professors, two specially-engaged academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and one awarded the nationally outstanding teacher. More than 30 long-term and short-term foreign experts are also employed every year. Students come from 31 provinces and regions are enrolled in Shihezi University. The total enrollment of students numbers 34,651, including 23,596 undergraduates, 3,843 postgraduates and 406 national defense students. More than 500 international students from 14 countries are also successively enrolled. 100,000 all kinds of graduates were cultivated successively. 200,000 management and professional talents were trained for the XPCC and the national agriculture and reclamation system. The University began to enroll international students since 2002. Initially, 18 Pakistani students were admitted to pursue Bachelor’s degree as majors in Clinical Medicine. Then the University started to enroll students from Chungnam National University who studied Chinese Language in 2004. Now, the number of Undergraduate Foreign Students majoring in Clinical Medicine has increased to 177, and the number of the students majoring in Chinese Language is 139. In Clinical Medicine teaching, British Teaching Syllabus in undergraduate education period has been adopted, the number of international students enrolled in the past years totaled up to more than 500. The university covers an area of 1,820,000 square meters and is equipped with up-to-date teaching and scientific research facilities. It has a well-equipped library, a large gymnasium, a multi-functional stadium and many modernized teaching buildings. There is a museum with a total area of 6.400 square meters, including 5 disply areas: The University Historical Museum, The Animal Museum, The Insect Museum, The Plant Museum and Xinjiang Military Historal Museum, which has become the base for science and technology education. Shihezi University has established all kinds of intercollegiate relationships with Massey University of New Zealand, Znate University of Japan, Taraz State University in Kazakhstan, more than 30 universities and Research institutes in the USA, Russia, Canada, Australia, Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Italy etc. The university has 4-year Undergraduate program, 3-year Master’ program and 3-years Doctoral program. All programs begin in the autumn term. 4-week, 12-week, one-semester Language programs are also available. The University has set up An International Education Center and established a Confucius Institute in Kazakhstan. From 2006, the University has held 18 foreign-aid training under the guide of Ministry of Commerce for 336 students from Russia, Central Asia, South Asia, up to about 12 countries, in the field of education, agriculture, animal heredity etc. Shihezi University stands on a good reputation of service, contributing to development and ranking it highly during its development.
